Part of: Handyman Business
A handyman should set up a Google Business Profile as a service-area business: say you do not have a location customers visit, hide your home address and list the cities or postal codes you serve, up to 20 of them. Then verify the profile, because Google says customers can find it only after verification.
This guide is part of our Handyman Business Growth hub. If you already have a profile, our 15 minute profile checklist covers the quick fixes.
Why does a handyman count as a service-area business?
Because you go to the customer. Google's service area page says that if you don't serve customers at your business address, you should remove the address from your profile and set a service area. Its guidelines give the example of a plumber who runs the business from home: that business should clear its address.
Google also says a service-area business can have only one profile for its whole area, and the sign-up page warns that making more than one profile per metro area can get the account suspended.
How do I create the profile?
Follow Google's sign-up steps:
- Enter your business name and choose your main category.
- When asked if you have a location customers can visit, choose No.
- Add your service areas by city or postal code.
- Add a phone number and your website.
- Verify the business.
What name and category should I use?
Use the name you use in the real world, on your truck, invoices and signs. Google's guidelines say not to add taglines, service keywords or locations that are not part of that name, so "Sam's Handyman Service" is fine and "Sam's Handyman Best Drywall Repair Austin" is not. Add "LLC" or another legal term only if it is part of the name you actually use.
For categories, Google says to pick as few as you need to describe your core business, and to complete the phrase "This business IS a" rather than "This business HAS a". Pick the main category that fits the bulk of your work, then add a small number of others only if they are true.

How should I set my service area?
List the places you actually drive to. Google's service area page says you can add up to 20 areas, by city or postal code, and you cannot set a radius. It recommends keeping the area within about 2 hours of driving time from where you are based. Edits can take up to 48 hours to show.
How does video verification work?
Google may ask you to verify with a video. The video must be one live, unedited recording of at least 30 seconds, made on a phone or tablet. It must not show other people's faces or sensitive information. For a business without a storefront, Google asks you to show:
- Where you operate, such as street signs and landmarks, or your neighborhood if you work from home.
- That the business exists, such as your tools and work equipment.
- That you manage it, such as doing a service, or a business permit, invoice or utility bill.
Google says the review can take up to 5 business days.
What do Google's rules say for each field?
| Field | Google's rule for a handyman |
|---|---|
| Name | Your real-world name only, no keywords or taglines |
| Category | As few as possible; "This business IS a" |
| Address | Hide it if customers do not come to you; no P.O. boxes or virtual offices |
| Service area | Up to 20 cities or postal codes, about 2 hours of driving at most |
| Phone | A local number under your direct control |
| Description | No links and no prices |
| Profiles | One profile for your whole service area |

How do I get reviews the right way?
Ask after every finished job. Google's review page suggests sharing a review link or QR code with customers, replying to reviews and valuing every review, good or bad. Customers need a Google Account to leave one.
Do not pay for reviews or offer discounts or gifts in return. Google says incentives for reviews are prohibited, and that applies to every customer.
A simple routine:
- Copy your review link from your profile.
- Put it on your invoice and in your job follow-up email.
- Reply to each review within a few days, by name and about the job.
What should match my website?
Your name, phone number, service area and the jobs you take should read the same on your profile and your site. Our handyman website guide shows what each page needs, and our guide on how to grow a handyman business covers what to do once the profile is live.

Questions
Should a handyman show a home address on Google?
No, if customers do not come to you. Google says a business with no staffed storefront should hide its address, and that a service business run from home should clear the address and set a service area instead.
How many service areas can a handyman add?
Up to 20. Google lets you list service areas by city or postal code, and it recommends that your area not reach more than about 2 hours of driving time from where you are based.
What does a handyman show in a verification video?
Google asks for one live, unedited video of at least 30 seconds that shows where you operate, such as street signs or your neighborhood, your tools or equipment, and proof you manage the business, such as doing a job or showing an invoice.
Can I give customers a discount for leaving a review?
No. Google's review page says offering incentives in exchange for reviews is prohibited. Ask every customer the same way, with a review link or QR code, and reply to the reviews you get.
