Part of: Cleaning Business Growth
Yes. Google lets a cleaning business that works from home list itself as a service-area business: you add a free Business Profile, turn off "Show business address to customers," and list up to 20 cities or ZIP codes you serve. Customers then see your service area instead of your home address.
Can I list a cleaning business on Google if I work from home?
Yes. Google defines a service-area business as one that visits customers but does not serve them at its own address, and it names cleaning services as an example. Service-area businesses can have only one profile for the whole area they serve.
There are two limits to know. Google's guidelines say P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes are not acceptable addresses, and a rented virtual office you do not work from is not eligible. A business that only operates online also cannot get a profile, but a cleaner who goes to clients' homes qualifies.
How do I add my cleaning business to Google Maps?
Search for your business first, because a profile may already exist. Google says you can add or claim a profile for free, and you need a Google Account to do it.
- Open Google Maps and search your business name and city.
- If your business shows up, select Claim this business, then Manage now.
- If it does not, go to business.google.com/add and select Add your business to Google.
- Use your real business name, the same one on your website and invoices.
- When asked about your location, enter your real address, not a P.O. box or virtual office.
- Pick a verification option and follow the steps.
How do I hide my home address?
Turn off one setting. Google's business address page says the address on a profile is public, and that a service-area business can choose not to show it.
- Go to your Business Profile.
- Select Edit profile, then Location.
- Next to Business location, select Edit.
- Turn off Show business address to customers.
- Select Save.
Google notes that if you hide your address and enter no service area, it picks a local area for you, so set your own right away.
How do I set my service area?
Add the places you actually clean, by city or ZIP code. Google allows up to 20 service areas and says edits can take up to 48 hours to show.
- Go to your Business Profile and select Edit profile, then Location.
- Next to Service area, select Edit.
- Choose a suggested area or type a city or ZIP code.
- Repeat for each place you serve, then select Save.
| Rule | What Google says |
|---|---|
| Number of areas | Up to 20 |
| How to set them | By city, postal code or another area, not a radius |
| Overall size | Not more than about 2 hours of driving time from your base |
| How long edits take | Up to 48 hours, if approved |
How do I verify a home-based cleaning business?
Use whichever method Google offers you. Google says verification options depend on your business type, public info and region, can't be changed, and can include phone or text, email or video. Reviews take up to 5 business days.
If you get video verification, plan the recording first. It has to be one live, unedited take of at least 30 seconds, filmed from your phone through your Business Profile.
- Film street signs or landmarks near your home to show where you operate.
- Show your cleaning tools, supplies, or anything branded, like a shirt or car magnet.
- Show proof you run the business, like an invoice or business permit with your business name.
- Keep bank, tax and ID numbers, and other people's faces, out of the shot.
What mistakes cause problems for cleaning profiles?
Most problems come from making the profile look bigger than the business. Google's guidelines ask for your real-world business name and a precise address or service area.
- Do not make a second profile for a nearby town. A service-area business gets one profile.
- Do not add keywords or taglines to your business name. Google says unnecessary information in a name isn't permitted and can lead to a suspension.
- Do not use a P.O. box or virtual office to look like a storefront.
- Do not list areas more than about 2 hours away.

Questions
Can I put my cleaning business on Google Maps without a storefront?
Yes. Google treats a business that goes to its customers as a service-area business and names cleaning services as an example. You list the areas you serve instead of a storefront address.
Will Google show my home address?
Not if you turn it off. In your Business Profile, go to Edit profile, then Location, and turn off Show business address to customers. Google says a service-area business should do this when it does not serve customers at its address.
How many service areas can I add?
Up to 20, set by city, ZIP code or another area. Google says the whole area should not be more than about 2 hours of driving time from where your business is based, and you can no longer set a radius.
How do I verify a cleaning business I run from home?
Google picks the verification options for you, such as phone or text, email or video. For a video, Google says a home-based business can film signs and landmarks in its neighborhood, its cleaning tools or branded items, and proof that it runs the business.
Can I use a P.O. box or virtual office instead of my home?
No. Google's guidelines say P.O. boxes and mailboxes at remote locations are not acceptable, and a rented virtual office you do not operate from is not eligible for a Business Profile.
